WAMEGO, Kansas (NBC/KXAN) — What started as a hobby to make other people smile, ended up helping a Kansas teen find his own smile as well.
Down in his parents’ basement Joseph Disberger creates his own masterpieces. He is a puppeteer, and he hopes to work for The Muppets or on Sesame Street someday.
Joseph is only 16-years-old. He taught himself how to do hundreds of different voices and he creates every puppet.
“People made it sound like it was rocket science, and had to go to a website to learn how to do this, and you had to buy this pattern to do that, and I was like I don’t have money,” says Joseph.
Joseph spends a lot of time at home since he’s home-schooled. Using his imagination, he found things around the house like t-shirts or sweaters to create puppets.
His passion for puppets started when Joseph was 9-years-old and feeling sad. Over the past few years a number of people he was close to have died.
“I became depressed and I was just kind of done with everything,” says Joseph.
Now, he performs at birthday parties and other places he can make people laugh, smile and even cry.
