AUSTIN (KXAN) — Photographs of an American hunter bagging a “rare” black Giraffe is going viral and sparking outrage over hunting in Africa.

Africland Post website tweeted two photos a few weeks ago with the caption: 

White american savage who is partly a neanderthal comes to Africa and shoot down a very rare black giraffe coutrsey of South Africa stupidity. Her name is Tess Thompson Talley. Please share

The photos showed Talley, who is from Kentucky, with the giraffe she killed. According to media reports, Talley posted on Facebook photos of her hunt in June of 2017 but it only recently got picked up due to the Africland Post tweet. 

In Talley’s Facebook post, she wrote, “Prayers for my once in a lifetime Dream hunt came true today!” Her post indicated they did get 2,000 pounds of meat from the large male giraffe. 

Trophy hunting is legal in a number of countries in Africa, including South Africa, which is where Talley bagged the giraffe. In an email to Fox News, Talley said “the numbers of this sub-species is actually increasing due, in part, to hunters and conservation efforts paid for in large part by big game hunting. The breed is not rare in any way other than it was very old. Giraffes get darker with age.” 

According to LiveScience, male giraffes become darker as they age. Research suggests male giraffes are completely covered in black blotches by the time they’re 10 years old. 

Defending the hunter, celebrity Ted Nugent wrote on his Facebook that “giraffes must be managed just like deer and elk and bears and cougars…”
