AUSTIN (KXAN) — An online petition is making the rounds to name a new school in Leander ISD for a Cedar Park teenager who was killed in a car wreck earlier this month.

Myles Hutcheson, 17, was killed Dec. 3 in Brushy Creek when he crashed into a tree. Hutcheson played on the Vista Ridge High School basketball team, and the school postponed its game the day after he was killed so the school and his teammates could mourn.

When news broke of Hutcheson’s death, almost 300 grief-stricken students left campus and many went to Northpoint Church where Hutcheson was an active member.

Now an online petition is asking Leander ISD to honor Hutcheson in a new way.

“We would also like to see the Leander ISD School Board vote to name an upcoming to-be-built school after Myles so that future generations of school children can know and build on his legacy,” petitioner Stephanie Jagen wrote. “Myles was an exceptional human being who truly knew how to love and live life to the fullest.”

At the time of this report, the petition had gathered more than 5,700 signatures. The petition’s goal was 7,500 signatures.
