FIFA unveils new Qatar stadium for World Cup

National News

QATAR (KXAN) —Soccer fans in Qatar packed in shoulder to shoulder Friday to catch the first glimpse of a new soccer stadium for the 2022 world cup.

The 40,000 seat venue was designed to resemble the sail of a traditional wooden sailboat.

The unveiling comes as FIFA plans to expand the next world cup to 48 teams from 32.

The world cup finals have also been moved from the usual June to a July slot to avoid the searing summer heat which is known to reach temperatures of 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
