EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (KXAN) — From model to teacher to astronaut and now to robotics engineer: Barbie’s already long resume just added another STEM profession to the list.
The new doll, sporting the ever-essential eye protection and a miniature robot, is designed to encourage girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and math careers. Currently, only 24 percent of STEM jobs are held by women.
Coding is a particular skill used in robotics that Mattel wants to encourage girls to try. It’s launching six free online Barbie-inspired coding exercises starting Tuesday.
