ANTHEM, Ariz. (KXAN) — An Arizona woman is calling her dog a “hero” after he leaped in front of her to face off with a rattlesnake.

Paula Godwin got up early Friday to go on a hike with her dogs, when she said she almost stepped on a snake.

“But my hero of a puppy Todd saved me,” she wrote on Facebook. “He jumped right in front of my leg were (sic) I surely would have got bit. This is what a hero looks like.”

Photos accompanying her post show her walking her two dogs before the incident, as well as her brave 1-year-old golden retriever with a swollen face.

Godwin said Todd “is great” and is expected to fully recover. The experience prompted her to start a GoFundMe to help other dog owners pay for anti-venom.

There are rattlesnake vaccines available for your dogs if you’re worried about snakes in your area. In Texas, they run about $25 per vaccine and gives you time to get your dog to a veterinarian.
