AUSTIN (KXAN) — Facebook is reporting some of its services are down for “required maintenance,” Wednesday. Users across the country are reporting outages on both Facebook and Instagram.
The social media site provided its users this message late Wednesday morning and the outage has continued for several hours:
“Facebook is down for required maintenance right now but you should be able to get back on within a few minutes.”
Further explanation from the company said such a message is usually shown to users if they are, “making an improvement to the database your account is stored on.”
Facebook says the process wouldn’t affect the users’ accounts but they would temporarily not be able to log on.
“Keep in mind, we don’t do site maintenance on all accounts at the same time. It’s possible that your friends will be able to access the site while your account is still unavailable,” Facebook officials wrote.
Downdetector, a site where users can report social media outages, showed the number of outage reports for Facebook spiked around 10 a.m. Wednesday and continued to grow. As of about 1 p.m., more than 10,000 reports had been made on the site.
Outage reports began spiking for Instagram as well with more than 13,000 outage reports had been made by 1 p.m.
