Memorial Trek Riders honor fallen deputy Jessica Hollis

DEL VALLE, Texas (KXAN) – Travis County Sheriff officers remembered fallen senior deputy Jessica Hollis at a Memorial Trek Riders Ceremony Friday morning in Del Valle.

Hollis was killed after being swept away by floodwaters while checking a low water crossing Sept. 18, 2014.

The Memorial Trek Riders is a core group of law enforcement officers who ride around the state every year honoring fallen officers in different cities.

At Friday’s ceremony, officers and Memorial Trek Riders rode in from North Texas to pay their respects to Hollis and her family.

“Being able to come out and show a little bit of respect and remind that family that their loved one hasn’t died in vain, and hasn’t been forgotten means a lot to them,” said Steven Bazany, a San Antonio Police Department officer and Memorial Trek Rider. “Helping them through the grieving process and helping them get to that point where they can say, ‘I can deal with this,’ is something that we can all do for each other.”

This year’s ride started in San Antonio on April 22 and ends Friday. The Memorial Trek Riders also rode through Brownsville, El Paso, Amarillo, Killeen, Little River Academy and will visit Port Arthur and Houston next.

Memorial Trek Riders have been riding across Texas since 1993. Their mission is to pay gratitude for the sacrifices these fallen officers have made to their communities and this state.
