AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Mayor Steve Adler joined KXAN Saturday morning after spending four days in Los Angeles and Seattle to see what those cities are doing right and what they learned from previous mistakes.

“We have to recognize there are two sides to the same coin,” said Adler when discussing the things he learned during his visits. “We have to make sure we identify places people can’t camp sit and lie but we can only do that if we identify where people can be.”

On July 1, the city of Austin passed an ordinance largely decriminalizing the act of sitting, laying or camping in public places.

Gov. Greg Abbott has strongly opposed the city’s new policy, threatening to “override” the new ordinance if it leads to people camping on city streets and sidewalks.
