Margaret Moore declares victory as next Travis Co. district attorney

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Democrat Margaret Moore declared victory Election night in the race for Travis County District Attorney’s Office, defeating Republican Maura Phelan.

Moore told KXAN’s Brittany Glas earlier Tuesday night she’s excited about a “brand new chapter” for criminal justice in the county, something she says the public’s been waiting for, and something the public deserves. She said the office hasn’t been running the way it should.

“I’m gonna give back… with every bit of the experience and qualifications to show what a District Attorney’s Office outta look like,” Moore said. “We’re gonna be the best District Attorney’s Office in the state of Texas.”

Moore said she didn’t expect to be where she is now, an elected official, because she didn’t plan on running. She says she was happily retired.

“I got in the race because of the passion I felt about the need for new leadership in this office,” said Moore.

Moore says plans are already underway to restructure the office. She says she will form a family violence unit and a civil rights unit to handle cases involving police officers’ use of force and says she’s prepared to handle cases dealing with APD’s DNA lab because that has become an issue. “We have identified what I think is a very aggressive plan moving forward. But, a very achievable plan.”

Moore said she also wants to take a closer look at low-level drug cases in Travis Co. to be sure the county is approaching and addressing these charges effectively.

“This community has demonstrated to me a huge outpouring of good will for a new administration and a huge desire for us to be successful and it is my goal, and I believe we will achieve, bringing that office to a high level of performance and effectiveness.”

Incumbent DA Rosemary Lehmberg is not running for reelection.
