Man who was hit, killed crossing I-35 has been identified

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The pedestrian who was hit and killed the night of Friday, Mar. 18 while crossing Interstate 35 has been identified.

Fabian Balderas-Cerritos, 30, was in the main lanes of I-35 just south of E. Riverside Drive when he was hit by “numerous vehicles” at around 9:12 p.m., police say. Witnesses said that they didn’t know which vehicle struck the man first, but that all the vehicles that hit him left the scene.

Witnesses also told police that several vehicles swerved to avoid the man. Police pronounced Balderas-Cerritos dead at the scene. Light rain was falling and the area was dark, police say.

The case is still being investigated. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit detectives at (512) 974-5576. Balderas-Cerritos’ death was the 14th traffic fatality in Austin of 2016.
