Man shot to death in front of San Marcos apartments

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — The San Marcos Police Department is investigating its fourth homicide this year after a 31-year-old man was found shot to death at an apartment complex on Hunter Road.

Police say the shooting happened outside an apartment at the Twin Lakes Villas located at 2917 Hunter Rd. around 2:17 a.m. Monday. When officers arrived, they found Robert Lee Castaneda face down and unresponsive with gunshot wounds to his torso and arm. Castaneda died at the scene.

Detectives are investigating but police have not made any arrests at this time.

“I have detectives doing search warrants on vehicles and any known witnesses in the area. We don’t have very much information though; we don’t have descriptions of the suspects at this point,” said Kelly Bomersbach with the San Marcos Police Department. “At this time it’s a very, very active investigation.”

Those living at the apartment complex say they were shocked and confused when they woke up Monday morning to find what remained of a very violent night.

“There’s blood on the ground, blood on the chair,” said one Twin Lakes Villas resident. The woman has asked to remain anonymous for her safety since the person responsible has not been arrested. “His mom, his brothers, they were all good people, they all got along. So, that’s why we are wondering what’s going on.”

The woman says the neighbors didn’t hear any fighting but did hear gunshots. “There were two shots, I thought it was the train but my husband was sure it was shots,” she said. “He took off running this way to the front, I took off running to the back and didn’t see nobody. Nobody ran that way, so we don’t know anything.”

The woman says she then started searching for clues in the surveillance footage of the complex. “The cameras show there are no vehicles that came out because there were no lights on any of the cameras. No lights coming into this driveway, no lights going out the back,” she said. “So this person has to be on foot, I’m assuming.”

Investigators say they did look at the video but didn’t see anything that could help with their investigation. Police say violent crime in that area is rare.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police. The city’s last homicide was in August. In that case, a San Marcos man was arrested and charged with murder after police say he beat his wife’s lover to death.
