Man shot, injured by officer Sunday identified

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The man who was shot and injured by an Austin police officer after he threatened people with a knife and led police on a chase Sunday afternoon has been identified.

William Elliott Mann is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The officer involved in the shooting is Matthew Michaelson, who has been with the department for two years. As is standard protocol for the department following an officer-involved shooting, police say Michaelson has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The Austin Police Department says the incident started just after 5 p.m. in the 9800 block of Interstate 35. The owner of La Michoacana Meat Market called 911 stating there was a man was in the parking lot threatening his customers with a knife. When officers arrived on scene at 5:10 p.m., they found the suspect behind the business.

APD says the case remains under investigation and will be reviewed by the department’s Internal Affairs Unit, the police monitor, the special investigation unit of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office and will also presented to a Travis County Grand Jury.
