Man rescued after jumping into Lady Bird Lake to save dog

News

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man and his dog were rescued on Red Bud Isle Tuesday afternoon after the man jumped in the water to save his dog, Stella.

Rescue boats already in the area for training responded to the rescue at 3:14 p.m. and were able to rescue Gregory Alton and his dog quickly, Austin-Travis County EMS said. The man was found hanging on a tree branch.

“Without hesitation, I just jump in and after her I’m just full on swimming,” Alton said. “Next thing I know I’m just being spun in the very center of the current and swimming for my life and Stella’s life, of course.”

Neither the dog nor the man were injured. The Austin Parks Foundation describes the park as a popular leash-free park for dogs and their owners. Red Bud Isle is in Lady Bird Lake, just south of Tom Miller Dam.
