Man killed in fiery I-35 crash in Jarrell identified

JARRELL, Texas (KXAN) — Authorities have identified the person who died in a chain reaction crash that shut down Interstate 35 in Jarrell for nine hours Tuesday morning.

The Texas Department of Public Safety say 26-year-old Alan Eduardo Dieguez was speeding in a Hyundai when he collided with an 18-wheeler being driven by 56-year-old Dane Rutter of Stockdale. Authorities say the Hyundai then ran off the freeway and into a ditch.

When Rutter got out of his truck to survey the damage, he was struck by another 18-wheeler that was trying to avoid the initial crash. A third 18-wheeler struck debris in the road and caught on fire. Rutter died at the scene of the crash.

Authorities say Dieguez, who works as an officer with the El Paso Police Department, is charged with driving while intoxicated and unlawful carrying of a weapon. El Paso police say Dieguez has been with the department for three years. He will be placed on administrative leave once he returns to El Paso.
