AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man accused of hitting his grandmother on the head with a hammer in February 2015 in Mexico, leading to her death, has been arrested in Austin.

Elmer Tinoco-Eutimio, 22, of Luvianos, Mexico, was detained Thursday morning by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and turned over to immigration officers.

Tinoco is charged with causing the death of his grandmother, Paula Virignia Carabajal-Vargas, 83, in Luvianos last year, west of Mexico City.

Before dying, she identified her grandson, Tinoco, as the person who hit her with a hammer. Carabajal eventually died at a Luvianos hospital.

The Mexican government requested help from U.S. authorities locating the man.

Tinoco fled to Austin shortly after the homicide, where investigators found he was working at a local construction site. He is now in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement pending future removal hearings.
