Man charged after Fayette County deputy shot in the face

LA GRANGE, Texas (KXAN) — A suspect accused of shooting a Fayette County deputy in the face last Thursday in La Grange now faces charges.

Shazizz Mateen, 49, has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault on a public servant, according to La Grange police.

A four-hour standoff last Thursday ended with a deputy, 32-year-old Calvin “CJ” Lehmann being shot and Mateen in custody. A La Grange police officer was also cut with a knife.

Lehmann was shot in the face with a shotgun as he tried to serve a felony warrant at the Carter Motel for Mateen who failed to register as a sex offender.

Lehmann lost his left eye in the shooting, but doctors are still trying to save his right eye. He has an eye surgery scheduled later this week. The sheriff asked for continued prayers and support, noting it will still be a long road to recovery.

The sheriff’s department says Lehman woke up Friday morning and was able to write three words to his family in the room: “I’m a fighter.”

A Facebook page has been set up with information on fundraisers for Deputy Lehmann. Online donations can be made through PayPal.

Donations for Deputy CJ Lehmann may be made online on the Facebook page through PayPal at or in person or by mail at the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office C/O FCSMBS, at 1646 N Jefferson St. La Grange, TX 78945. In the memo portion, please write “For CJ”.
