NEW YORK, NY (KXAN) — The Texas Longhons won their second NIT Championship with an 81-66 win over Lipscomb on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.
Texas played suffocating defense on high scoring Lipscomb and got 19 points from senior Dylan Osetkowski and 16 from fellow senior Kerwin Roach and in their final game as Longhorns.
Sophomore Jase Febres, who scored 17, hit a straight away NBA range three to give Texas a 41-27 lead, as they closed the half on a 22-5 run. This after going more than five minutes before scoring their first points.
Texas opened the second half like they started the game, struggling on offense. The Bisons went on a quick 7-0 run to cut the Texas halftime lead in half before Roach hit a three to extend UT’s lead back to 10 at 44-34. Texas would heat up from three, hitting four in a row at one point to hold on to their double figure lead. Texas then started getting inside wtih Febres hitting a running layup and getting fouled to open up 77-55 lead.
Texas hit 13-27 from 3 and held the Bisons to 39 percent shooting and 17 points below their season average.
Texas finishes the season 21-12. The 21 wins are the most in Shaka Smart’s four years at Texas.
