AMES, IA (KXAN) — After 34 minutes of basketball, it looked like Texas was about to pull off a fairly stunning upset at Iowa State.
The Longhorns, who faced double-digit Cyclone deficits several times, took a 48-45 lead against Iowa State on a jumper by Matt Coleman.
From there on, the defense failed Shaka Smart’s team in a 65-60 loss from Iowa State’s Hilton Coliseum.
“I thought we had enough energy to go do what we needed to do down the stretch. We just didn’t play good enough defense,” Smart said.
Iowa State busted back with an 11-0 spurt to grab an eight point lead. A tip-in from Texas freshman Jaxon Hayes with 1:39 to go put the Texas down by just one, but Iowa State scored on back-to-back possessions.
Coming off the win against Kansas at home, Texas likely faced its toughest challenge remaining in the regular season playing against a sold out crowd, and a super-talented Cylcones line up. There are no lay-ups in the Big 12.
Next up, the Longhorns host the hottest team in the Big 12 Wednesday night.
Baylor owns a five-game winning streak with quality wins at Oklahoma and at home against Texas Tech. Guard Makai Mason is lighting a fire under the Bears rejuvenated offense with excellent outside shooting.
