A 7-year-old wrote a note to the Round Rock Police Department soon after its officer, Charles Whites, died of injuries he got when responding to a hit-and-run. Inside it were heartfelt words, and four dollars.
“Thank you for everything you do,” the note from little Ximena read. “I’m sorry to hear about Officer Whites. I wanted to donate my allowance.” The note had been slipped under the department’s front door last Wednesday, the night of Officer Whites’ funeral.
The department found Ximena’s father on social media and planned a surprise for her.
On Monday, Chief Allen Banks showed up to show the department’s appreciation for her gift. They shared a hug and took photos, and he gave her and her brother an inside look at Officer Whites’ patrol vehicle. She even walked away with a RRPD Challenge Coin.
Afterward, her father reached back out to the department in appreciation of the “beautiful gesture.”
“Ximena can’t stop saying ‘I can’t believe I got to meet the Police Chief!'” her father wrote. “She is beyond excited!” He added that her brother said he wants to be a police officer when he grows up.
“Thank you Ximena and everyone else in the Round Rock community who expressed their support,” the department tweeted. “This is why we do what we do. We love our city!”
