LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) -- A Leander man has been charged with murder after confessing to killing his cousin by running him over outside a home on the 4300 block of Red Oak Lane early Saturday morning, according to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office.
"The victim in this case and his friend, or relative, knew that there was an issue going on with the family member because the victim had shared that he had some kind of discord with this family member," said Sheriff Robert Chody.
Jesse Vickers, 28, ran over Fredrick John Goodrow, 34, as Goodrow was leaving the home on Red Oak Lane. Goodrow was leaving with a friend when Vickers took his grandmother's car, a tan Honda, he had borrowed earlier in the day and ran him over.
According to Sheriff Chody, Vickers ran over Goodrow twice and attempted a third time, but was stopped.
"A third-party jumped on to the victim, as to protect the victim, and in this case the suspect veered off and left the scene," said Chody.
The victim was still alive when paramedics arrived but he was later pronounced dead.
The car was found at a home Vickers frequents. Sheriff Chody said Vickers then went through the woods to his home on Oak Creek Road where deputies found him and arrested him.
He later confessed to the crime. Chody said Vickers seemed somewhat intoxicated.
"This is obviously an intentional act by the suspect in the case," said Chody.
KXAN spoke with the victim's sisters and neighbors off camera who said they never imagined this would happen. Neighbors described the neighborhood as "tight-knit" and the victim's sisters said they were all spending the evening together at a family gathering.
The victim's sisters mentioned alcohol being involved and said they believe the suspect's drinking played a big role in their brother's death.
