Pflugerville ISD to hear from parents as school boundaries realigned

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas (KXAN) — Pflugerville ISD is working to realign its attendance boundaries across the district and wants to hear from parents about the proposed changes.

District officials hope the move will benefit the schools and the students. “This gives the district the opportunity to balance out resources and give better educational opportunities for all students,” Tamra Spence said, communications officer with the district.

The district is focusing on redistributing students from seven schools:

  • Copperfield Elementary
  • Delco Primary
  • Dessau Elementary
  • Dessau Middle School
  • Westview Middle School
  • Connally High School
  • Weiss High School

As growth has been observed in the southeast side of Pflugerville, a drop was seen in enrollment at some of the campuses that are being underutilized due to aging communities. The district hopes to fix that with boundary alignment.

Pflugerville ISD is also taking this opportunity to eliminate an extra step in students’ academic progress.

Currently, students who attend Delco Primary Elementary only go from Pre-K to second grade then students transition to Dessau Elementary School for third grade through fifth grade before heading to middle school.

Both Delco and Dessau will now become Pre-K through fifth-grade schools.

Officials also hope to help fill one underserved elementary school in the area — Copperfield Elementary. Students who may have fallen in the Delco/Dessau neighborhoods till this year may have to start attending Copperfield Elementary next school year.

The district will host a community meeting Wednesday evening to answer parents’ questions and hear input.

Parents can go to Dessau Elementary School at 5:30 p.m.

PfISD has set a timeline for implementation:

  • January 2019: Presentation to PfISD School Board
  • February 2019: If approved by the PfISD School Board, impacted families will be notified by the end of the first week of February via postal letter.
  • March 2019: Transfer window opens.
  • August 2019: Impacted students will start at their new campus.

PfISD has released the boundary attendance zones map showing the draft proposed boundaries across the district for the 2019-20 school year.
