Elgin man found dead on porch after argument with neighbor

ELGIN, Texas (KXAN) -- The Travis County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a man's body was found on the porch of a house Friday night.

Deputies responded to a multiple shots fired call in the 12600 block of Waynespur Lane at 10:34 p.m. That's near the area where U.S. Highway 290 splits with State Highway 95.

When deputies arrived, they found the body of Thomas Hardin, 48, from Elgin, lying on the porch of a house with gunshot wounds, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

Deputies said Hardin had been at his neighbor's house, with whom he had argued with recently, earlier in the day. Deputies said evidence shows multiple shots were fired from different weapons.

The man who allegedly fired the shots declined an interview. A family member of his, however, told KXAN that he acted out of self-defense, but deputies could not confirm that information on Saturday.

The sound of gunfire startled many neighbors Friday night. Phillip Hunt, who lives directly behind the house where the shooting happened, said he heard nine gunshots, but initially mistook them for fireworks.

"It's just hard to believe it happened right behind my house," Hunt said.

Nearby a woman who asked not to be identified said she heard several shots fired and worried that some may have hit other homes.

"Stray bullets could have hit somebody, somebody else's family," the woman said. "There's already two families that are traumatized by this event, and it could have been more."

Another neighbor said two bullets pierced his garage door, but fortunately, no one inside was hurt.

Deputies are working with the Travis County District Attorney's office to find out what led up to the shooting and are investigating the incident as a homicide.

No charges have been filed.
