Deputies investigating body found in southeast Travis Co. as suspicious

TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Sheriff's deputies are investigating after a man's body was found near an intersection in southeast Travis County, about two miles southwest of the Circuit of the Americas.

A driver reporting a suspicious odor called authorities at 2:28 p.m. Wednesday.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office said the body of 31-year-old Johnny Cardenas, of Austin, was found near the intersection of Blocker Lane and Von Quintus Road, next to State Highway 130.

Authorities say the man's body was discovered 6 feet away from the road. The body had obvious trauma but an autopsy is being conducted to determine his cause of death.

The sheriff's office said there are suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. Anyone with information is asked to call the TCSO tip line at 512-854-1444.

Stephanie Neal lives nearby and tells KXAN she smelled something unusual today but just assumed it was an animal carcass.

"It breaks my heart to know that this could happen. You know whether it was a hit and run or somebody killed him and put him in the ditch, I don’t know, but it scary," Neal says.
