AUSTIN (KXAN) — Homicide detectives are investigating after a man died at a hospital Monday morning after being found in east Austin. The Austin Police Department says this is the city’s 77th homicide of 2021.

According to APD, the incident took place in the 8400 block of Garcreek Circle. That’s near Loyola Lane and the Travis County Expo Center.

Officer Jose Mendez says officers responded around 8:10 a.m., after reports of several gunshots in the area.

Once police got there, they found a man in his early 50s in a “weeded area” with “obvious trauma to the body,” Mendez says. Austin-Travis County EMS took the man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:11 a.m.

Right now, officers have a person of interest in mind, but no one in custody. A description of that person of interest was not given out.

This is an isolated incident, Mendez says, and there is no threat to the public at this time.

Homicide detectives are still investigating at the scene and interviewing witnesses.
