Large truck strikes ATV, killing driver near Buchanan Dam

Hill Country

BUCHANAN DAM, Texas (KXAN) — A man died after a large truck carrying gravel struck his all-terrain vehicle outside his home in Buchanan Dam.

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that James Richard Vonkrosigk, 64, was killed Thursday on Texas 261, which is also known as the Texas Hill Country Trail.

A DPS spokesperson told KXAN that Vonkrosigk pulled out of his driveway in his 2009 Polaris Ranger and in front of a freightliner driving south. The truck driver tried to swerve left, but struck the ATV on the driver’s side.

Vonkrosigk was thrown from his ATV and run over by the truck, according to DPS. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver crossed the center line, rolled and slid down an enbankment, spilling his load of rocky gravel. A crew came out Friday to haul away the debris.

The truck driver is expected to be okay after he was taken to the hospital Thursday.
