FREDERICKSBURG, Texas (KXAN) — A driver who ran a red light and drove underneath a tractor trailer on US 290 in Fredericksburg died, police say.

Fredericksburg police say the crash happened in the town’s busy Main Street area just before 7 a.m. A tractor trailer was going northbound on Washington Street and was attempting to make a left turn to head westbound on US 290 when a passenger vehicle driving eastbound on US 290 ran a red light and went underneath the truck.

The driver of the passenger vehicle died at the scene. The passenger had to be removed from the vehicle and was taken by helicopter to a hospital in San Antonio. The passenger is expected to be okay.

The driver of the semi was not injured. Police have not released the identity of the deceased driver.

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently looking at the possibility of creating a bypass route where drivers don’t have to go through the busy center of Fredericksburg. A map created by TxDOT shows the area they’re looking at for building the alternate route would be southwest of Fredericksburg.
