SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A woman driving a car was killed in a crash with an 18-wheeler on Interstate 35 Thursday night in San Marcos.

The city of San Marcos said in a statement Friday that the woman struck the rear of the 18-wheeler and went under the trailer around 10:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes near State Highway 123.

The driver and only occupant of the car, 22-year-old Jayde Nicole Sherbert of San Marcos, died at the scene. The truck driver was uninjured. The city says Sherbert is a former Texas State University student.

Investigators believe Sherbert was texting just before the crash, the city said. While investigators have yet to determine what speed the two vehicles were traveling, traffic was already slowed at the time due to road construction in the area.

Two traffic lanes were blocked until about 4:30 a.m. Friday.
