HAYS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — A volunteer firefighter has died after a collision at the border of Hays County and Caldwell County Friday morning.

It happened around 4:40 a.m. on State Highway 21 near Farm to Market Road 2001 in Niederwald, Texas. Officials say Nick Zoulek has died. A man and a woman were also taken to the hospital. Three cars were involved in the crash.

The man who died is reportedly a volunteer with Chisolm Trail Fire Rescue in Lytton Springs, northeast of Lockhart. He was driving to his job in San Marcos in his personal car when the crash happened. His coworkers responded to the crash and recognized him.

“Firefighter Nick Zoulek was selfless in his service to the communities of Caldwell and Hays County for over three years,” Chief Mark Padier said. Neighboring fire departments are providing support and coverage as CTFR deals with the loss.

This stretch of SH 21 from Niederwald to Highway 80 in San Marcos has had a number of deadly crashes, and in 2016 was slated for safety improvements, including lowering the speed limit, building shoulders and adding a signal light at FM 2001. In 2015, officials also added flashing lights after a school bus was hit.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Zoulek’s family.
