Texas State University student who drowned in apartment pool identified

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A Texas State University student who died after drowning at an apartment complex pool on Wednesday morning has been identified, San Marcos police said.

The department’s officers responded to the Treehouse Apartments at the 800 block of north LBJ Drive after a call about an unresponsive woman. The complex is just south of the Spring Lake Natural Area.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Binuja Ghising.

A release from the department said a group of people were hanging out around the pool at night to the early morning hours, and some of them could not swim and were drinking alcohol, according to interviewed people at the scene. The pool hours at the complex are from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Friends on the scene told officers they found the Ghising in the deep end of the pool and because they couldn’t swim, they flagged down a passerby who pulled her from the pool, started CPR and called 911. An officer then took over until EMS medics arrived.

When medics got there, there were no signs of life and Ghising was pronounced dead at 6:37 a.m.

Police who were on the scene said because the water was murky and the lighting around the pool was minimal, they think friends lost track of her and did not notice her drowning for a short period of time.

The department wants to remind the public to be careful and keep a watchful eye while enjoying the pool with the hot weather approaching.
