Man pleads guilty in death of cyclist killed in Kyle hit-and-run

KYLE, Texas (KXAN) — A San Marcos man accused of hitting and killing a cyclist in Kyle last year and then driving off pleaded guilty to accident involving death and tampering with physical evidence.

Police say the 48-year-old Villegas hit 53-year-old John Lyon as he was riding on the southbound frontage road of Interstate 35 near Yarrington Lane on May 27, 2018. Lyon’s body was found on the side of the road. Villegas was arrested in Houston on June 20, 2018.

Villegas was sentenced to probation on the accident involving death charge and 5 years and 221 days on the tampering with evidence charge. He is currently in custody in the Hays County Jail.

Two other members of Villegas’ family faced charges in connection with Lyon’s death. Villegas’ brother, 50-year-old Daniel Villegas, was arrested on June 29 on a charge of tampering with evidence. Kevin Sean Deleon, 31, also faced tampering with evidence and making a false report to a police officer charges.
