KYLE, Texas (KXAN) — The brother of a man accused of hitting a bicyclist next to Interstate 35 and then driving away has been charged with tampering with evidence.
Fifty-year-old Daniel Villegas, of Kyle, is accused of trying to cover up the hit-and-run and making false statements to police.
His brother, Gilbert Villegas, 47, of San Marcos, was arrested in Houston on June 20 on a charge of accident involving death for the crash on May 27.
Kyle police say John Lyon, 53, of Kyle, was riding his bike on the southbound frontage road near Yarrington Lane when he was hit. Police said they did not know how long Lyon’s body was on the side of the road before he was found.
A driver passing by found Lyon’s body around 11:45 a.m. that Sunday morning.
Additional arrests of Villegas’ family and friends could be imminent, police said. “The vehicle suspected in the hit-and-run, a charcoal gray Kia Optima with possibly front passenger bumper damage and a missing side view mirror, has not been recovered,” Kyle Police Cpt. Pedro Hernandez said.
Investigators were able to link the hit-and-run to Gilbert Villegas after finding a side mirror at the scene.
After searching for every 2009-2012 Kia Optima in the area, police said they were unable to find Villegas or his car.
Anyone with information about the incident or those who know the location of the vehicle should call Kyle Police at 512-238-3232.
Daniel Villegas was booked into and released from the Hays County Jail Friday on a $5,000 bond.
