SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KXAN) — San Antonio news outlets are reporting former state lawmaker Ruth Jones McClendon has passed away.
WOAI reports State Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins confirmed McClendon, 74, died Tuesday morning. She had battled brain cancer and in 2014 underwent an operation to remove water on her brain.
The San Antonio democrat served as a state representative for 20 years. She resigned from her Texas House seat in 2016. During her last legislative session in 2015, she had to use a motorized wheelchair to get around.
Fellow lawmakers and friends posted about McClendon’s passing:
Congressman Lloyd Doggett said in a statement, “Her legacy of public service continues to inspire us to work for causes she championed, including access to healthcare and helping all students fulfill their God-given potential.”
