Oklahoma man killed crossing Highway 71 in Bastrop

BASTROP (KXAN) — A man from Oklahoma died Sunday night when he was hit by a vehicle while trying to cross State Highway 71 East in Bastrop.

The accident took place just before 9 p.m. near Schaefer Boulevard. Witnesses tell us several more vehicles crashed in a chain reaction trying to avoid the initial collision and victim.

The victim was identified as Justin Carl York, 41, of Oklahoma. Police say York was walking north on SH 71 when he tried to cross over the eastbound lanes of traffic. He was hit by a vehicle and died at the scene.

The driver who hit York stayed at the scene and was treated at St. David’s Emergency Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Police say that was the only other person who was injured.

SH 71 was closed for more than 90 minutes but reopened around 11:30 p.m.

The three-car pile-up caused significant delays in the area Sunday night. Bastrop Police say Highway 71 was reopened at 11:30 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene following the collision and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
