Man killed in crash on US 290 east of Elgin identified

BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — The man killed in a three-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon on US 290 east of Elgin has been identified.

According to TxDOT, the crash shut down US 290 at Farm to Market 696.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says a pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer was going westbound on US 290 at an unsafe speed for the weather conditions.

As the truck driver approached a sedan and SUV going eastbound, the flatbed trailer lost control and went into the eastbound lane, striking the sedan.

The SUV then crashed into the trailer, according to DPS.

The driver of the sedan, Ahmed Zaidan Khazaal, 32, of Austin, died at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck, a 27-year-old man from Corpus Christi, was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The driver of the SUV, a 66-year-old man from Huntsville, was also taken to the hospital in stable condition.
