BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Four kids who died in a crash that happened on Friday night were Huntsville ISD students, and three of them were siblings, according to a letter sent out to Huntsville High School parents.
The family was traveling to watch their other sibling, who is part of the Grenadier Guard, perform for National Competition.
The three siblings killed were in 11th, 8th and 6th grade. The fourth person who died was a friend of the family who was a former GG and Huntsville High 2018 graduate.
The two-car crash happened around 8:50 p.m. at State Highway 21 and Quarter Horse Loop.
The letter says the driver of the vehicle with the Huntsville students inside was the mother of the siblings, and she is in a coma at Dell Seton Medical Center.
A Department of Public Safety spokesperson said according to surveillance video from a nearby gun store, the mother was driving with her family on the inside lane of SH 21 when another driver who failed to control their speed struck their vehicle.
The driver who did not control their speed did not brake until .6 seconds before the impact, which has led DPS investigators to think the person was on their cell phone.
All four lanes of SH21 were closed in both directions but have since been reopened.
The school plans to have counselors for students available on Monday.
