Woman dies from crash after being asked to run across road in heels

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin woman was struck by a vehicle and killed after running into the road after she was asked how fast she could run in high heels.

Austin police responded to a call at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, after a woman was struck by a vehicle on the southbound Interstate 35 frontage road approaching Seventh Street in downtown.

The victim, Deemora Benson, 18, was asked how fast she could run in high heels, according to police. She proceeded to run into the road and was hit by a vehicle. 

The driver of the car, a maroon GMC Yukon, left the scene after hitting Benson, but returned a short time later.

Benson was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center but died of her injuries two weeks later on Sunday, Sept. 2.

The driver, Felipe Hernandez, 21, was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid.

Hernandez remains in the Travis County Jail on a $4,000 bond.
