Woman cut during fight next to UT campus; suspect arrested

UT stabbing

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman in her 50s was cut during a fight on the north side of the University of Texas at Austin campus Monday night. Austin police say the fight involved two homeless suspects, a man and woman, chasing a male victim.

None of those involved are affiliated with the university, UT police said.

Austin police and UT police responded to the incident at Whitis Avenue and 27th Street, which forms the northern boundary of the campus.

Austin-Travis County EMS was called to the scene at 10:28 p.m. and took the woman to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said the woman was injured when the male suspect, identified as 54-year-old Evan Lee Smith, accidentally cut the woman’s arm.

UTPD initially reported the woman was stabbed, but APD later clarified she was not intentionally injured.

Smith was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge. The male victim left the scene before police arrived and was not injured, APD said.
