AUSTIN (KXAN) — Downtown Austin’s Sunday started off with a bang as the parking garage located at 715 West 23rd Street was imploded at 8:30 a.m.
The parking garage was demolished with explosives by a private contractor at 23rd Street and Pearl Street. For the safety of the community, officials from the Austin Police Department and the UT Austin Parking and Transportation Services asked that people avoid the area during the demolition.
An exclusion zone was created to keep people out of harm’s way, from West 24th Street’s north boundary to West 22nd Street’s south boundary. San Gabriel Street and Nueces Street marked the west and east boundaries of the exclusion zone respectively.
UT Austin Police say to expect street closures around 23rd and Pearl streets until noon on Sunday due to the implosion and clean-up.
