AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police released a video of a suspect vehicle fleeing the scene of a deadly hit-and-run early Wednesday morning in east Austin.
Jonathan Deleon, 29, was hit in the 2000 block of East Cesar Chavez Street near Elkhart Street around 2:05 a.m. Wednesday.
Police say he was at the back of his car on the driver’s side when a white van or SUV traveling westbound hit him.
APD said earlier Wednesday morning Deleon had possibly been reaching into the car when he was hit. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
“I hope we find you,” said Deleon’s sister Ariel Hernandez. “We definitely need to know who did it. I hope you come out and say you did it.”
Deleon’s family says he was preparing to go to Alaska to help with his father’s company. They say he was scheduled to fly out when police were still investigating the crash.
“I was like be careful, you have to leave at four, dad is depending on you. Just stay chill,” Hernandez said referring to the texts she sent her brother earlier that night. “Okay sis, yeah I will,” Deleon replied.
But two hours after that text, Hernandez got another one, this time it was from her brother’s friend. “Hey, your brother got hit,” she said reading the text. “I’m like, is he okay, how bad was it? I was just shocked.”
Next to the crime scene stands a cross with balloons and empty beer bottles acting as a memorial site for Deleon.
“The smile could like up the world, light up the room. That is something we’re always going to remember, his smile,” said Deleon’s wife Crystal Corr-Deleon.
APD released security footage that showed the suspect driving off and a man in the street trying to flag down the vehicle after Deleon was hit. Officers are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-5576.
The police department is also requesting that any businesses near east Cesar Chavez and Adam L. Chapa Sr. streets review their surveillance cameras between 2 and 2:10 a.m. from the night of the hit-and-run.
The Deleon family is preparing a BBQ benefit Saturday afternoon to help pay for his funeral. The benefit starts at 11am and will go until 3pm at the Advance Auto Parts at 2730 E. 7th Street.
