AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 10-year-old girl who went missing from her east Austin elementary school Thursday was found safe Friday morning, police told KXAN.
After hours of searching overnight, police tweeted at 6:55 a.m. Friday that the girl had been found. She had last been seen around 3 p.m. Thursday at Overton Elementary School.
After classes ended Thursday, she was supposed to go to an after-school activity but she never showed up, according to a spokesperson with the Austin Independent School District.
More than 20 officers actively searched the area overnight and reviewed surveillance footage from the school for signs of the girl. They also called people in nearby neighborhoods using the Everbridge Crisis Communication system asking them to be on the lookout for her. The system is a mass alert system that alerts people in the area via calls and text messages.
“I feel relieved. I really do. I feel relieved to know that God answered my prayers, maybe not just mine, but God answers prayers,” said the neighbor of the missing 10-year-old upon hearing the news she had been found safe.
APD had previously released two photos of the missing girl in an effort to help find her but now that she has been found, KXAN has taken the photos down to minimize harm and protect her privacy.
