TxDOT breaks ground on RM 2222 widening project

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- For those who travel along Ranch to Market 2222 a big chunk of traffic during the weekday morning commute can be attributed to Ranch Road 620 and Bullick Hollow Road.

Drivers turning onto RM 2222 from RM 620 right before reaching Bonaventure Drive can expect to share the road with a couple thousand others. In 2017, 39,021 cars traveled through that area every day, up 5,000 from three years earlier.

To help with the demand, the Texas Department of Transportation is widening a section of the heavily traveled roadway — from Ribelin Ranch Drive to Bonaventure Drive.

It's a mile-long stretch of road where officials hopes an extra lane will help ease the traffic woes after a TxDOT study showed an increase in travel times by 40 to 59 percent by next year within the corridor from RM 620 to Ribelin Ranch Drive.

The new lanes will not be continuous along the stretch of road. TxDOT will add an extra lane stretching from Bonaventure Drive to Sitio Del Rio Boulevard heading eastbound. Then for those traveling westbound, an extra lane from Ribelin Ranch Drive to Sitio Del Rio Boulevard will be available.

TxDOT said there will also be dedicated turn lanes with raised medians to help reduce the number of crash points along the road.

"I think that's great, any little bit would help," commuter Gloria Chamberlin said. "I think they should have thought about that when they built these roads. I don't know why they have to constantly have to go back and widen everything, I mean we're growing in Texas just do it while you're starting that job."

On Wednesday, TxDOT officials broke ground on the project and construction is expected to be completed by summer 2020.

This is just one of two projects along RM 2222. This summer, officials will start on the RM 620 bypass road project from Steiner Ranch Boulevard to RM 2222 will go out for bid.
