Traffic stop turns into gun and drug bust in east Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) --  Austin Police officers arrested a man for unlawfully carrying a weapon in his car on Thursday evening in east Austin.

When officers in the area saw Aaron Chavez pull out of his driveway and fail to use his turning signal at a left turn, they prepared to make a routine traffic stop. Chavez delayed pulling over but then eventually came to a stop and stepped out of his car.

At this time, the officers involved noticed that he was the main subject of another drug case associated with his address.

Chavez had his wife and one-year-old daughter in the car during the stop, but officers allowed for his wife to step out and take care of their daughter who began crying while officers attended to Chavez.

Officers noticed remnants of marijuana on the passenger seat and the floor of the car, and began searching the vehicle. Though Chavez's wife began defending his whereabouts that day to the officers according to court documents, the officers found a plastic bag of marijuana.

In addition, law enforcement found 15 grams of methamphetamine in the car's floor boards, and a black, semi-automatic 9mm pistol beneath the front passenger seat.

Austin Police arrested Chavez and he is charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon.
