Pflugerville, Texas (KXAN) — The Travis County Sheriff’s Office arrested a teen Friday, Jan. 18, who they say robbed and shot a man in his own front yard.
According to the arresting affidavit, the victim arrived at his home on Mandarin Crossing in Pflugerville at approximately 1:40 a.m., when he saw what he describes as a suspicious vehicle approaching. The victim told officers that he decided to remain in his vehicle until he believed it was safe to enter his home.
After a short time, the victim believed it was safe to exit his vehicle, but when he approached his front door, the same car drove up from the opposite direction. According to the victim, two men got out of the vehicle and approached him very quickly. The victim alleges that one of the men was armed with a pistol, and told him to “give me all you got.”
The victim told officers that he tried to hit and push past the unarmed man when he was shot in the abdomen. Fearing another gunshot wound, the victim ran from his yard to a neighbor’s home and jumped the fence into their backyard. The affidavit reports that the neighbors helped him and called police.
When the police arrived on the scene, the victim was able to tell them that the car the suspects were driving was a black Dodge Avenger, and authorities distributed the description of the vehicle. APD officers pulled over a car matching the description for a traffic violation. When stopped, a man left the back seat and ran from the officers. A semi-automatic pistol was found in the grass in the direction the suspect fled.
The driver, 18-year-old Jorge Bonilla and remaining passenger, 18-year-old Rigoberto Ortiz, were detained. Bonillo told officers that Ortiz and the suspect who fled the scene asked him for a ride and that he was unaware of what the two were planning.
According to investigators, the shell casing found in the victim’s front yard matched the bullets in the recovered pistol.
Ortiz was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. Bonilla also faces an aggravated robbery charge.
