AUSTIN (KXAN) — A teenage girl was shot near Lakeline Mall and has potentially serious to life-threatening injuries, according to Austin-Travis County EMS.

It happened in the parking lot of the Target and HomeGoods across the street from Lakeline Mall that is between N. FM 620 and the northbound side of the service road at US Highway 183.

Austin Police say three suspects in a four-door sedan pulled up to her family’s car. They say a suspect then got out of the sedan and while she was getting inside her family’s SUV, the suspect shot inside the vehicle four times, striking her once in her back.

At last check, the victim was speaking to police when they arrived but is now in surgery at St. David’s Round Rock.

Austin Police says her family had just been shopping at the shopping center before this all happened.

The suspects got away before officers got there, but they are searching for a dark colored-sedan with three suspects inside. APD says the suspects were last seen leaving the parking lot of the Target at Highway183 and Lakeline Mall Drive.

APD says there’s no early indication that the suspect and victim know each other. Police have received three statements from witnesses so far related to this case. They also said they have not made any arrests yet related to this shooting.

As of Sunday, Austin Police did not provide any updates on this case.

However, a man who said he was in the parking lot when the shooting happened spoke with KXAN Sunday. He said the shooting happened in front of the Home Goods store next to Target.

This man was waiting there to pick up his wife who works in the shopping center. He did not want to be identified in KXAN’s report because the suspects have not been caught.

But he said he did hear the four gunshots go off, then saw the suspect vehicle speed off immediately after, driving west toward Highway 183.

He believes the vehicle was a maroon or red Honda Accord, though police have not confirmed those details.

This witness called 911 and walked over to the SUV where the teen had been shot. He recalls speaking with this teen who said she had been shot in the back, he then walked to the other side of the car and observed a bullet hole wound in the back of her torso.

“She was very very calm and quiet she did stay conscious the whole time,” he said of the teen.  He said this teen’s boyfriend and a nurse there helped treat her until she could be taken to a hospital.

This witness also said that the suspect’s vehicle sped off immediately after the gunfire, he wonders whether the suspects actually got out of the car to fire the weapon.

“It was within two seconds, the car sped off to the point you heard the tires go *eeeek* on the asphalt, they gunned it,” he said.

“If these guys aren’t caught, like who else is going to be shot?”  he wondered. This man fears for his family and says it makes him wonder whether it’s safe to take his son shopping there.

“I just want to make sure that these people get caught and something gets done because it’s not ok,” he said. “We need to do our part, so if anyone knows anything, they got to say something, because if not, it could potentially be your dad, your mom, your kid who gets shot and killed.”
