Teen hit and killed while crossing I-35 on foot late Saturday identified

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A teen who was killed last Saturday night as he crossed Interstate 35 on foot has been identified by Austin police. 

At about 10:55 p.m. Saturday, 15-year-old Cesar Saunders was trying to cross the interstate near the 14000 block of N. I-35 when a Honda Civic traveling northbound struck him, police say.  

Saunders and the driver of the car were both transported to local hospitals. Saunders succumbed to his injuries at about 1:14 a.m. Sunday. The driver was admitted to intensive care.

This was the 31st fatal wreck in Austin this year that resulted in the 32nd death. Last week, Police Chief Brian Manley said there have been 30% more traffic deaths this year than last year and officials are concerned
