AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Thursday afternoon, the Austin Police Department and Austin ISD Police officers responded to a suspicious package found at Covington Middle School in southwest Austin, with the package being cleared by APD around 5 p.m.

They got the call to respond to the 3700 block of Convict Hill Road around 3:45 p.m.

According to AISD police, the package was found in the parking lot just as school was being dismissed. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to be patient as there is traffic due to the heavy police presence as the scene is cleared of units.

AISD PD has confirmed that students are safe, although all after-school programs are cancelled. The school has called parents to pick up remaining children, who can be picked up in the circle drive off Lochinvar Street on the east side of campus.

This is a developing story. KXAN will update this with more information as it becomes available.
