Suspicious device found in same apartment complex as morning SWAT call

AUSTIN (KXAN) — First responders are at a southeast Austin apartment complex Thursday night, the same location as a SWAT standoff that ended peacefully earlier in the day, after a suspicious device was found around 7:22 p.m.

Police said just before 10 p.m. the device was “neutralized.” About 30 minutes later, evacuated residents from the Stassney Woods Apartments were able to return to their homes.

A KXAN viewer said around 8:30 p.m. he received an automated emergency message on his phone about the incident at the Stassney Woods Apartments at 1800 E. Stassney Ln., just east of Interstate 35.

A second emergency message from APD said there was about to be a controlled detonation of an “explosive device.” The message told residents there was no reason to call 911 as there were still officers in the area.

Police initially said the situation was a bomb threat, but later clarified that it was considered a suspicious device investigation.
