Suspected drunk drivers charged in deadly downtown crash identified

Kelsi Weatherby

The two suspected drunk drivers charged following a deadly crash in downtown Austin early Monday morning have been identified by police.

Kelsi Weatherby, 27, was driving a Hyundai Elantra southbound in the center lane of the Interstate 35 frontage road toward the Cesar Chavez Street intersection when she was hit from behind by a red Chrysler 200 sedan driven by Devin Nethery.

Medics with Austin-Travis County EMS say a man is dead following a three-car collision Monday morning at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Street and the southbound Interstate 35 frontage road.

The collision around 2:43 a.m. caused Weatherby to crash into a Volvo in front of her.

Nethery and Weatherby were both taken to a local hospital in non-life threatening condition. Dean Hood, the passenger in Weatherby’s car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers say the driver of the Volvo was uninjured.

Nethery, 22, has been charged with intoxication manslaughter for the crash, while Weatherby was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated.

Police say Nethery’s mugshot is not yet available.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8544.
