AUSTIN (KXAN) — For the second year in a row, Stripes convenience stores are selling collectible cups featuring the late singer and Queen of Cumbia, Selena Quintanilla.
The store announced on its website that it will release three designs throughout the year, with the first coming Saturday, Feb. 23 at participating stores. It says it will begin selling the cups at 10 a.m., but that people can begin lining up at 8 a.m.
“Suzette Quintanilla was the creative genius around the design of the cups,” Stripes said, referring to Selena’s sister. “She provided vision and leadership ensuring that every detail of this project would honor Selena’s legacy.”
Each insulated cup costs $3.99, not including tax, an increase of a dollar from the year before. There is a limit to two per person. It will be a limited-edition item in stores, but Stripes says Selena fans can buy all three designs as a set at the annual festival honoring Selena in Corpus Christi. Fiesta De La Flor, which Stripes sponsors, is April 12-13 this year.
Last year, Stripes also released a Selena-themed cup, which sold out quickly. H-E-B has also worked with the Quintanilla family to release its own Selena-themed bags. The first time, the bags were so in demand customers crashed the H-E-B website.
“The Selena cups serve as a commemorative item that Selena fans can add to their collection,” Stripes said on its website. “Based on overwhelming demand from our customers and Selena fans, we have added more cups this year.”
